Schack Art Center

My Swirly Brain and Other Oddities

2017 Artist of the Year Gale Johansen brings her whimsical and detailed artwork to the Schack for this solo exhibition opening August 10.

Johansen’s quirky sense of humor and off-center view of the world is evident in her art. The bright colors, whimsical figures, and wildly intricate patterns and textures she incorporates tell a unique story and offer the viewer a fresh perspective.

There is a message to be gleaned from each of her pieces – at times the title gives it away, and other times the viewer must interpret the action for themselves. Every inch of her work is fully thought out to convey the message and comes directly from the heart.

A Seattle native, Johansen has a degree from the Burnley School of Professional Art (known today as the Art Institute of Seattle) and later received a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Washington. In addition to the Schack Art Center, she has exhibited in many venues throughout the Northwest including Bellevue Art Museum, Lynnwood Arts Commission Gallery, Solovei Gallery, Lowell Art Works, Red Door Gallery, and Revolution Gallery.

M-F 10am-6pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun12-5pm
